Life-Saving Actions Recognized
Yesterday at Station 81, Dr. Casey Patrick had the honor of presenting Lieutenant J. Rountree and Firefighter S. Kroll with a Life-Saving Award for their heroic actions on Friday, 11/29/24.
While en route to a training assignment, Lt. Rountree and FF. Kroll were driving Booster 83 to Station 86 when they noticed a vehicle in a ditch. At first glance, it appeared abandoned or broken down, but their keen observation led them to stop and check.
Upon approaching, they saw that the driver was slumped over and unresponsive. With the doors locked, Lt. Rountree quickly broke the passenger window to gain access. They found the driver without a pulse and not breathing. Acting immediately, they initiated CPR, applied an AED, and secured an advanced airway. Within minutes, their efforts successfully restored the driver’s pulse, just as EMS arrived to provide further care.
This situation highlights the unwavering dedication of our firefighters. They were not dispatched to this call. They were simply on their way to training—but their alertness, initiative, and rapid action made the difference between life and death.
Had they not stopped, the driver would not have survived. Instead, thanks to their quick thinking, this story had a life-saving outcome.
